Sounds great. Sign me up! Red Bell is making a splash at the Village this year with it’s Final Descent Series. It’s a 12 hour race this Saturday, mixing endurance with downhill adrenaline: two of a Jacksonite’s favorite things. If you aren’t into riding the race, you can always enjoy the after party at Nick Wilson’s.
Last fall Fitzgerald’s Bicycles was happy to find out that he could find someone to haul his old (heavy) monitors 4 miles to the recycling center. If you want to see this video on the big screen, be sure to check out the last Bike-In Movie tonight!
In addition, Fitzy’s will be donating a Haro Cruiser to the raffle! Beers under the stars, delicious brews, winning a cruiser, watching kids ride bicycles to save E.T. from the po-lice? Yeah, those dinner plans can be pushed back a day or two.

Below you will find today’s trails and pathways report for Jackson Hole. Trail Report, August 1oth, 2011
Greater Snow King Area/Munger Mountain Area/Teton Pass Area
Last week the FS crew worked with a Wilderness Ventures group clearing the Dog Creek to Little Dog Creek loop.
The FOP crew worked on completing two new sections of trail: one at the bottom of Phillips Ridge, with the help of several volunteer groups, and the other a connector trail from the Pine Glades development to Sink or Swim, which trail crews are hoping to call the “Shade Monkey Trail.” This trail was made with a mini excavator that narrowed down to 3 feet wide, providing 2,244’ of shaded single track. Both of these new sections should be finished this week.
The TFR crew has finished some work on the upper Fuzzy Bunny trail including some new road gap jumps.
Crews and volunteers are working hard daily, addressing problem areas first and then moving to trail improvements as needed. Please be patient, send in your observations, and come out and help – Friday AM’s have now moved to the Teton Pass Area (meet at the Stagecoach at 8am).
Possible Old Pass Road Closures
Silver Star Communications began work this week to install fiber optic cable along the Old Pass Road. This work is park of a larger project to install approximately 100 miles of high-speed fiber optic cable to improve connectivity of broadband service across Wyoming. The work along Old Pass Road will help complete a key loop for this project. Heavy equipment will be on Old Pass Road during the project, which is expected to take about two weeks. To ensure public safety, temporary trail closures will be in place where machinery is working. To read the entire press release, click here.
Pathways Report, August 10th, 2011
Pathways should be open to use during the asphalt patching work, but users should follow instructions from work crews and pay attention to regulatory warning signs. During the sealcoating work, sections of pathway will be closed temporarily.
County Begins Work on South Park Loop Bridges, Road Closure near Melody Ranch
On August 15th, Teton County will begin construction work to replace the existing South Park Loop Road Bridge over Flat Creek near Melody Ranch. This project will require closure of the South Park Loop Road in the vicinity of Melody Ranch for the entire 4-month construction period. Concurrent with the road bridge project, the County will also begin construction of a new pathway bridge over Flat Creek adjacent to South Park Loop Road. The bridges will be operational and South Park Loop Road will re-open by mid-December. To read the complete press release, click here.
Hey Riders, So another session of self abuse at Pierre’s Hole this past Saturday. Tons of fun. A great turn out from the locals and others from all over the planet. And maybe a few from nearby planets? A leisurely start at 10:15 for the 50 milers. It was warm, dry and never got above 75 degrees. Perfect race conditions as the weeks rains made the course tacky. Some new trail( still a bit bumpy) but good to mix it up.
I had ridden some of the course last Wednesday and Mill Creek specifically was scary with a water runnel right down the middle of the trail. Thanks to Troy Barry and his crew for making it much more rid able.
The race was fun – though seemed to hurt more than usual. As the 40+ champ for the last two years, I had a lot to live up to…….or not. I knew going in there was some stiff competition this year. A lot of strong contenders not from here.
I had a good start, I had an awesome first decent of Mill creek. I hammered the road up to Bustle Creek decent. I was amazed how many I passed. at one point, like 15at once? The usually long hump up Dry Creek (really painful) and out into Ricks kind of by myself. Start/Finish and off for the second lap. Now the pain increasing. Even better descent down Mill Creek ( as there was no one in front of me) and another good road climb. An OK descent to the Dry Creek #2. Now the pain really begins. I was passed by a few not in my class, and maybe one in the 40 +? I did not care, I kept pushing forward, but not fast enough. Finally the top and slowly into Ricks again. Now I was home. 8 miles to go. Then I began to Cramp. The inner thighs. Damn I hate that. I popped my last 3 Ecaps and moved on. It helped for a while, but a mile from the end I started to cramp agian. Damn. Then I saw some dude, a 100 miler on his last lap and asked him if he had Ecaps? He looked, actually stopped in the middle of his race and found none. I found one last shot of my Egooo and I guess there was enough lytes in it to save me. I finished. Yeah. With no good training except racing, I felt good about my race. I had record time and ended up 4th in the 40+ and a podium as they went 5 deep!! Not bad for this fat out of shape geezer.
Just happy for another clean race, no crashes, no bonks, no flats and no mechanicals.
Oh, and congrats to all my buddies for there podiums. I think just about everyone got a spot.
Cheers, DS
For the Mountain Bike Racers itching to get a ride in, check out Lone Peak’s Revenge!
The Friends of Pathways bring us once again to the pathways to enjoy what we shouldn’t take for granted. The work involved to make, and to continually expand our pathway system should never go without celebration!
