Well, it’s been a while since I dusted off the lights to head out for a night ride on the trails, but I was just itching to get out on the trails. It’s hard to believe that with all the rain and snow we’ve had that the trails are rideable but they are. I rode from the house about 8:30 up to Cache Creek Sidewalk and connected into the middleish section of Putt Putt. Surprisingly there were some soft spots on the Sidewalk. Putt Putt was in excellent, tacky condition with only one soft spot. I didn’t have to turn the light on until about 9:15 which is amazingly late. I recently had my Rock Shox Pike fork Pushed by the guys down in Loveland, CO and upgraded to a Rock Shox Monarch 4.2 rear shock. Not only does the bike climb well it sucks up everything on the way down and I swear I can ride faster due to the efficiency. After a super fun and fast descent I headed up the Hagen Highway to Sink or Swim, walked the two snow sections and bombed my way back down to Snow King Ave.
We don’t have a weekly, shop mountain bike ride planned but if there is interest in one we will get one started. Please give a call and let me know if this is of interest to anyone.
See you on the trails!

When Scott asked me to write a few words about erectile dysfunction as it relates to bike seats and long distance riding I was “excited”. In a few of the infamous Urology ads I have eluded to issues related to sitting on a bike saddle for long periods of time. It could be erectile dysfunction, urethritis, prostatitis, and numbness. Not forgetting the women riders, the female perineum can go numb too. So, this is for all the numb nuts out there riding the roads on their bicycles.
Temporary genital numbness is a common side effect of long distance cycling and cases of impotence have been reported. Perineal compression leads to a decrease in penile blood flow. The shape of the bicycle saddle could be a factor affecting penile perfusion. Cycling in a seated position leads to compression of perineal arteries with a significant decrease in penile perfusion. Is the padding important or the saddle width that prevents compression of the arteries? Does the type of bicycle make a difference or is it the height of the handlebar compared to the height of the saddle? In my research, it appears that studies began in the 1970’s and have increased steadily. The Urology literature has many articles and the studies continue. It seems that there are many factors that contribute to erectile dysfunction and you need to be educated about them if you are going to be sitting on your saddle for hours at a time.
The traditional sport or racing saddle with a nose extension has been shown to have greater than 2 times the perineal pressure than saddles without a protruding nose. This is referred in an article,” Cutting Off the Nose to Save the Penis”. This sounds catchy, but it’s not very funny if you suffer from E.D. and it is irreversible! In my opinion, knowing your anatomy is the key. Where are the blood vessels and nerves that supply the penis and vagina? The bike seat is almost the same shape of the perineum. When you sit on that saddle for long rides you are taking a risk of compressing those vital structures.
Bicycle riding is great exercise! We live in a place that supports and encourages physical activity. We love riding our bikes up mountains and on the roads. Make good choices and educate yourself. The effects of chronic long distance cycling can be permanent on narrow bicycle saddles. There is evidence based investigations which can help men and women make good choices based on science. Please join in and listen to the discussion on May 6th and learn more…about numb nuts.
