I told myself I’d never own a white bike. But that was before I saw the 2009 Cervelo R3! Of course I was mainly drawn to it by the Squoval downtube, micro thin seat stays and Cervelo’s Smartwall Carbon. But the final straw was the extremely sexy finish on the R3.
Sunday I left on my first ride on the R3. I decided a spin up the Targhee road was the best way to get to know my new bike. Flats, wind, climbing, descending – a ride up to Targhee has it all and the R3 loved every minute of it. The bike accelerates at the drop of a dime, turns chip sealed roads into velvet, feels like it was born to climb, and descends effortlessly. Sure, lots of bikes can go fast and feel comfortable doing it. What struck me most about the Cervelo R3 was its handling. Reaching for a bottle in a crossroad, waving to other riders while holding a tuck on the descent, letting off the brakes in hairpin turns, and riding no hands while scrolling for a new playlist were easy. The bike is just fun to ride without any quirky handling issues whatsoever. No wonder it was ridden to victory twice at Paris Roubaix. Maybe it will be a contender in the Moose Roubaix!
